Compare annual heating energy costs
Use a full year of heating use from your bills. Subtract hot water, cooking, cooling and other household use first. For oil, adjust deliveries for changes in tank level. This comparison assumes the same weather and heat demand.
Method and sources
Annual useful heat = heating units × fuel energy conversion × current efficiency. Heat-pump electricity = useful heat × heating share ÷ seasonal COP. Backup cost = current energy cost × remaining heating share. Electric resistance is treated as 100% efficient at the point of use.
